You are Manglik if Mars occupies the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house from your Ascendant, Moon, or Venus. This is the classical Manglik definition. But being Manglik is not automatically a marriage obstacle — nearly 50% of all charts show some form of Mars placement in these houses, and traditional Jyotisha lists over a dozen cancellation rules (Mangal Dosha Bhanga) that neutralise the effect. Mars in its own sign (Aries or Scorpio), Mars in Capricorn (exalted), Mars aspected by Jupiter, and a matching Manglik in your prospective partner's chart all cancel the dosha. The three lagnas that trigger Manglik status
Mars is checked from your Ascendant (Lagna), your Moon sign (Chandra Lagna), and Venus's position (Venus Lagna). If Mars sits in the 1/2/4/7/8/12 from any of these three reference points, the dosha applies. High-Manglik is when Mars afflicts from two or three of the reference points — this is where the "strong Manglik" label comes from. Single-reference Manglik is often mild and easily cancelled.
Cancellation rules that make Manglik status irrelevant
Mars is nullified when: (1) placed in Aries, Scorpio, Capricorn, Leo, or Cancer, (2) aspected by Jupiter or a strong benefic, (3) both partners are Manglik (dosha cancels mutually), (4) Mars is combust or retrograde in the 7th, (5) the age is 28+ (Mars matures at 28 and its effects soften), (6) the 7th lord is exceptionally strong. When two or more cancellation rules apply, Manglik status is effectively cancelled.
