Do I have Kaal Sarp Dosha?

Rahu-Ketu axis check with types, effects and remedies

Kaal Sarp Dosha forms when all seven visible planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn) are hemmed between Rahu and Ketu on one side of the axis. Because Rahu and Ketu are always exactly 180° apart, the seven planets end up "trapped" between the two shadow points — creating the dosha. There are 12 named types based on which houses Rahu and Ketu occupy (Anant, Kulik, Vasuki, Shankhpal, Padma, Mahapadma, Takshak, Karkotak, Shankhnaad, Ghatak, Vishdhar, Sheshnaag). Each type has distinctive life themes: obstruction to marriage, financial instability, health delays, or professional stagnation. The dosha is partial if any single planet falls outside the Rahu-Ketu axis (called Kaal Sarp Yoga vs full dosha).

How to identify Kaal Sarp Dosha in your chart

Plot your Rahu and Ketu longitudes. Draw a line through both. Check if every other planet sits on one side of that line. If yes → full Kaal Sarp Dosha. If one or more planets sit on the opposite side → the dosha is broken or partial. Our free birth chart calculator flags this automatically. The type of dosha is named by the house Rahu occupies: Rahu in the 1st house = Anant Kaal Sarp, Rahu in the 7th = Karkotak, and so on.

Life effects and what each type typically brings

Common themes: sudden gains followed by sudden losses, delays in marriage or childbirth, family disputes over property, chronic health issues that resist diagnosis, and dreams of snakes. Anant Kaal Sarp (Rahu in 1st) brings self-doubt and identity confusion. Takshak Kaal Sarp (Rahu in 7th) delays marriage. Sheshnaag Kaal Sarp (Rahu in 12th) causes chronic sleep or foreign-land anxieties. Understanding the specific type is essential to selecting the right remedy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most powerful Kaal Sarp remedy? +

Kaal Sarp Shanti Puja performed at Trimbakeshwar (Nashik) or Kalahasti (Andhra Pradesh) is considered the most complete remedy. Home-based remedies include silver Nag-Nagin visarjan on Nag Panchami and daily recitation of Maha Mrityunjaya mantra.

How long does the dosha stay active? +

Kaal Sarp is a lifetime chart pattern, but its intensity varies by dasha. Rahu and Ketu mahadashas (18 + 7 years combined) are when its effects are most felt. During other dashas, the dosha runs in the background.

Does Kaal Sarp make life impossible? +

Absolutely not. Many highly successful people (including several Prime Ministers of India) have had Kaal Sarp in their charts. It creates a specific set of challenges but also unique gifts — deep intuition, foreign connections, transformative careers.

Is partial Kaal Sarp as serious as full? +

No, partial Kaal Sarp is significantly milder. The planet that falls outside the axis acts as a "breaker" and channels much of the dosha's intensity into productive outlets.
